Intermittent starting problem

My 2015 etec 90 HO has a starting problem. Engine runs great but every once in a while it just won't crank. All cables are tight, control is in neutral, all lights work, it doesn't respond to the key. If I wait a while , it starts like normal. When the problem is present and I turn the key I can hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds, lights come on and then off like normal, when I turn the key I can see the volt meter drop very slightly but it won't crank. I tried moving the gear shift back and fourth to make sure it was in neutral but nothing happens. Then 15 to 60 minutes later I'll try the key again and it will start like normal. I have an appointment with a local dealer and he said he thinks it's the starter solenoid. And my appointment is 2 weeks away.

From your description I agree with the dealer as it could be an intermittent solenoid. Often it is quicker and easier to just change out a relatively inexpensive part when there is a problem that comes or goes.

 

Also ask the dealer to inspect the wiring around the solenoid and nearby for any chafing or sharp bends or very tight ty-raps.
