Sometimes you may find a serial number stamped on a silver aluminum disc that is pressed into a cavity on the engine block.

If you are looking for the year of the motor, post pictures of all sided of the powerhead and of the decals on the motor cover. From that we may be able to assist you.

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. If you elect to do it yourself, be sure to use caution, common sense, and to observe all safety procedures in the vicinity of gasoline, moving engine parts, high temperature components, heavy items, and electrical or ignition systems.

The information offered here is only general in nature and should not be construed as complete factory approved procedures, techniques, or specifications. Always use the proper service manual for your motor, up-to-date service literature, the correct tools, and have an understanding of how to proceed with troubleshooting and repair methods. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with a procedure, a situation or a technique, enlist the services of a factory trained technician.

When trying to research the serial number, the following message appears.

Invalid Serial Number OR Serial Number older than Model Year 1996

How about pictures of the decals on the motor cover and images of the powerhead with the cover removed? We need all sides to help determine the age of the motor.

Outboard motors do not  use freeze plugs but  sometimes the factory stamped  identification characters or serial numbers on the silver colored aluminim discs that were tapped into a recessed area of the engine block. One of theses silver discs is pictured in a previous image.

Is it possible to double check those numbers as they refer to a 1994  25 HP Johnson? Perhaps an in-focus closeup of the disc may help.

Can you also post photos of the decals on the cover and of the 4 sides of the motor with the cover removed?
