Problems with batteries

Hi, looking for some help. I have a new 2012 150 e-tec. engine runs great. Problem is with batteries, both are approximately 4 years old 1 starting 650 cca and 1 dual 650 cca. Batteries removed from boat and charged, engine starts ok with battery switch on both, run boat  around switch to bank 1 or 2 engine cranks fine. here is problem, set switch on either battery by itself and run for a while, when I switch to other battery engine will not start, I switch battery switch to both engine starts no problem, my question is do u think batteries are weak and need replacing or something can be wriong with electrical system? I don't want to buy new batteries and have same problem, what should I check for ? Thanks

Re: Problems with batteries

From your description and because the batteries are already 4 years old, I'm sure it is time for new ones.

According to the 2012 service manual, both your batteries are undersize and have smaller CCA ratings than the minimum factory recommendations. Minimum is 675 CCA in warm weather and 750 CCA if used in colder temperatures.

Theses minimums are for the engine only, so it is best to get the largest battery you can afford above the minimums to allow for the boat's electrical load such aslights, pumps, radios, sounders, radar, and other accessories.

Also make certain that the cables and wiring for the batteries, selector switch, and boat electrical system is correctly installed and not drawing down the unused battery.

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. If you elect to do it yourself, be sure to use caution, common sense, and to observe all safety procedures in the vicinity of gasoline, moving engine parts, high temperature components, heavy items, and electrical or ignition systems.

The information offered here is only general in nature and should not be construed as complete factory approved procedures, techniques, or specifications. Always use the proper service manual for your motor, up-to-date service literature, correct tools, and have an understanding of how to proceed with a repair. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with a procedure, a situation or a technique, enlist the services of a factory trained technician.

Re: Problems with batteries

Thanks Bill, I went to my dealer, he suggested same things. Based on the age of both batteries he recommended I replace them. He also told me to give the connections and setup a once over. He said this was an odd problem , not something that usually occurs.  He told me if it happens with the new batteries I should bring it in for service. Picked up 2 new interstate batteries 850 cca 1000 mca. Will see how it goes thanks.
