I bought a motor today and was looking for the serial number and couldnt find it. I looked on the motor and on the transom bracket and found nothing. But looked like there had been a sticker on the port side of the transom bracket, just wore off i guess. Is there any other way to figure out the information for this motor: serial number, year, etc? It looks to be a slightly older model and all i know is that it is a 6 h.p. evinrude.
Sometimes there is a quarter coin sized aluminum plug on the engine block that has numbers or a model number stamped onto it. A missing serial number tag on a used motor could be a red flag for a stolen motor or it could be just something that happened.
Another way to determine the year is to post pictures of the engine front, back and each side both with and without the motor cover and we may be able to narrow the year down close for you.
That appears to be a 1987 6hp.
Jumping in from this old posting. All I have is my serial number off the freeze plug on the engine to identify the year and model. I called BRP and they said they could not help pre1997, but the dealers certainly could. My dealer certainly could not, nothing would pull up in the online resource.
Can you help? The serial is #0431798. I think the motor is a 90 to 92 big bore looper 225.

perhaps if you post images of the motor cover and of the 4 sides of the engine block I may be able to narrow down the year for you.
Have you removed the gearcase and waterpump? If so, is the driveshaft rigid or does it wobble around meaning that it is the 2-piece version?

Serial numbers before 1996 are not readily accessible, sorry.
A one piece driveshaft makes the gearcase a 1990 or earlier model.
