Re: Need help identifying this 50 HP

Remove the motor cover and look on the engine block for a silver disk with numbers stamped on it. Post a clear picture of the disk or post any letters and numbers that are stamped on it.

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. Should you elect to perform repairs yourself, use caution, common sense, and observe safety procedures in the vicinity of flammable liquids, around moving parts, near high-temperature components, and working with electrical or ignition systems.

The information offered here is only general in nature and should not be construed as complete factory approved procedures, techniques, or specifications. Always use the proper service manual for your motor, up-to-date service literature, the correct tools, and have an understanding of how to proceed with troubleshooting and repair methods. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with a procedure, a situation, or a technique, enlist the services of a factory trained technician.

Re: Need help identifying this 50 HP

Yes but it is often cheaper and easier to obtain a tilt and trim bracket such as Panther or CMC.

Re: Need help identifying this 50 HP

Any word on how good are these engines? Compared to other brands? I am learning, and upgrading from a 15 hp which I love to a 50hp, and am excited about mounting that 50 and taking it out to the water. Hoe reliable are these?

Re: Need help identifying this 50 HP

You are talking about a 25 year old motor with an unknown maintenance and operating history. Have a trained technician check it over completely before spending time and money to have it rigged out on the boat.

Just like cars, appliances, airplanes and other mechanical devices, they are only as good as they were maintained.

Re: Need help identifying this 50 HP

Thank you,  I totally agree.  I finally got pictures of the engine with the cover removed, can you see something to help you figure the approximate year of it???
