Johnson outboard

I have a 1995 Johnson outboard 48hp. It is locked in the down position because he assist cable is broken. The motor has to be up to replace the cable. I can not figure how to release it so that I can raise and repair. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Johnson outboard

The only way to release & raise the motor is to undo the plastic nut on the cable at the cylinder end. Remove the cable. Using a thin flat blade screwdriver gently raise the piston while someone tries to lift the motor. Please note if you aren't gentle enough there is a chance you will bend the piston shaft & will have to replace the complete cylinder.
