1988 70hp Tach & unknown plug question..

[ Edited ]

Want to hook up a tach, my boat mechanic said it would be a "grey wire".....he thought off the main harness up by the controls.....I was wondering if it could be this unused plug on my motor,  the  black plug in front of the big red harness plug in this pic, it has 3 wires the go to??  One is greyIMG_20210105_174438876.jpg

That connector is for the VRO. Must have been disconnected. Your mechanic is right. There should be wires for tacho and trim-gauge at helm end of harness. Trim-gauge use black, red and white/tan wires. Tacho uses black, red and grey wire.

I believe that Nordman means purple wire, not red wire in the previous post.

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. Should you elect to perform repairs yourself, use caution, common sense, and observe safety procedures in the vicinity of flammable liquids, around moving parts, near high-temperature components, and working with electrical or ignition systems.

The information offered here is only general in nature and should not be construed as complete factory approved procedures, techniques, or specifications. Always use the proper service manual for your motor, up-to-date service literature, the correct tools, and have an understanding of how to proceed with troubleshooting and repair methods. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with a procedure, a situation, or a technique, enlist the services of a factory trained technician.

Wolf66, Does your control box have a 3 pin socket on the lower back end? There were some rigged with old controls that had a tach connector on the shift/throttle control.
