1990 25HP tiller stall out while running

Had succssfully replaced alot of parts after overheating in Aug 2017. Was running good and then had a problem after warm up after running 10min/1 mile or so the engine started coughing and would only run at idle. Let it cool would run fine the warm up and cough again and only run at idle.
Water was coming out of tell tale and id check and it would be mildly warm. I convinced myself maybe the new thermostat was faulty and the hear sensor put it in safe mode.
I then removed the thermo stat to test that theory and the motor ran well for 2 miles and then abruptly shut off and will not restart. Not smoke not overheating no bogging down just totally shut off. Checked spark is good and plugs are wet w fuel. Any thoughts about things to check?

If the engine started coughing, then likely there is a fuel delivery problem. Often you will find leaking connectors, bad hoses, or loose clamps. Use a timing light to check for ignition abnormalities also.


You have to perform the basic troubleshooting tests to first determine if you have a fuel, electrical, or mechanical problem. Do not overlook the fact that the motor may have more than one issue.

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor.
