New starter

Hello e-nation and thanks for all the great information offered here. I've been contemplating replacing my starter on my e-tec due to some problems starting when its cold. My question is do I replace the starter solenoid with the one listed on the parts diagram for the 0587007 starter or do I replace with the original solenoid. The motor is a 75 hp model E75DPLSUM, serial# 05167297.

Thank you

Kevin

The starter solenoid in the parts catalog #586774 has been replaced by a new number #5009214 solenoid kit. This kit includes a new solenoid to starter cable.

Re: New starter

Thanks Rick for the reply. So you are saying that part #5009214 is the starter solenoid that I should install with the new starter motor part # 0587007.

Thanks again

Re: New starter

You are replacing the original direct drive starter with the new style gear reduction starter. This may require some cutting/trimming of the plastic flywheel cover.
The starter solenoid is the same one that was used on all year models.
Solenoid #587020 or
Solenoid kit (prefered) #5009214

2007 I-3 used solenoid 586774 which superseded to kit 5009214. Don't know why, because kit's instructions does not include I-3 for any other replacement than solenoid 587020.

So, to purchase solenoid 587020, if old 586774 fails, is sufficient. Around $ 20.00 price difference between kit and soleoid.

Cheers.

Re: New starter

Nordmann, I think the "solenoid kit" was because the early I3 straight drive motor would get overloaded in cold weather cranking and the high amperage draw could overheat the starter to solenoid cable.
I use the kit when upgrading the old starter but use just the solenoid if it's just a solenoid failure.

Re: New starter

Still curios Rick, that the instructions mentions I-2, V-4 and V-6 but not I-3. They must have felt the cable was sufficient for I-3?

Re: New starter

Sorry, I misunderstood your previous post. I probably never read the directions.
