Throttle lag/play

Maybe this is normal but the new controls, (2017 installed)  on my evinrude "appear" to have lag/play in them. When I push the throttle into forward or reverse it moves for a good amount of time with little to no rpm change then you hit a spot and the rpm jumps and sorta jerks the boat, reverse seems worst.
Maybe this is setup correctly and I need to get accustomed to it, just purchased the boat,  but if it can be adjusted to a smoother rpm increase I would like to do so.

Re: Throttle lag/play

Your control box lever will normally move close to 45° from vertical when shifting into gear. The remainder of the travel is for the throttle opening.

It is possible that your cables are not adjusted correctly or may have a bind in them. please see your dealer as we have no way to determine how your motor is rigged and set up.

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. Should you elect to perform repairs yourself, use caution, common sense, and observe safety procedures in the vicinity of flammable liquids, around moving parts, near high-temperature components, and working with electrical or ignition systems.

The information offered here is only general in nature and should not be construed as complete factory approved procedures, techniques, or specifications. Always use the proper service manual for your motor, up-to-date service literature, the correct tools, and have an understanding of how to proceed with troubleshooting and repair methods. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with a procedure, a situation, or a technique, enlist the services of a factory trained technician.
