Does the rod or the line contribute to being able to “feel what’s going on”?

I’m a beginner and have using a pretty cheap rod my bf and I found in his old garage up until now. I’m currently visiting my grandparents who live on the Missouri, and we dug some fairly old but really nice rods out of the barn and IMMEDIATELY noticed a huge difference. I could suddenly actually feel what was going on- vibrations of dragging on the bottom, catching on moss or debris, and when I got a bite it was like WHAM, super strong an distinct. The rods are currently using braided line instead of the monofilament I’m used to using. So is this sudden improvement in being able to feel due to the rods themselves or the different kind of line?
