Re: 60 HP E-TEC 2013 WORST ENGINE I EVER HAD

I feel your pain. I've been an eventude guy for many year with no complaints. I bought a boat a year ago with an old Finich on it and knew that motor had all kinds of problems. I looked into getting a new 300 etec and then cam across a used 2014 owned by Charles Walgreen. So I bought it and had it installed might have saved 3500 by the time it was all said and done. Then power head blew within first 10 hours. Warranty covered it and new power head and life is great. Made some fishing plans for 4th July and on the way in from fishing Thursday it just shuts off while running and doesnt't start and I get towed in again. Weekend plans are ruined and I'm pissed. I should have just kept the Finch, same **bleep** different day and would have been thousands less. I talked to many about 2 motors versus one before repower as I was planning to run over to the Bahamas a few times during the summer. Everyone said 90% of the time it's a fuel problem and it dosen't matter how many motors you have. Well no way in hell I feel safe crossing now. Weekend is now ruined and I'm thinking I made a really bad decision. 20 hours in the water and a month or more in the shop seems to be the pattern.

Re: 60 HP E-TEC 2013 WORST ENGINE I EVER HAD

I agree.  I purchased one new in 2014 and have had to replace computer once, injectors twice, coils twice.  Engine has only 320hrs.

if you are looking for an outboard look at anything other than evinrude

Re: 60 HP E-TEC 2013 WORST ENGINE I EVER HAD

With very little details disclosed and not being there to hear or to test the engine, we can only offer general suggestions besides having a trained professional check over your motor.

I assume that the motor is due for its 2nd 3yr./300 hr. service by an Evinrude dealer. That service may take care of your engine problems or can be used to find them.

Has the muffler filter been changed before as required?
Is the motor being started with the throlttle open even slightly?

Has the shift switch on the motor been inspected and adjusted?

Has a cylinder balance test been performed?

Has the fuel pressures been monitored at all rpm?

Has the TPS been tested throughout its whole range?

Has the motor been water tested with a laptop and diagnostic software to monitor the engine conditions?

***************

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. Should you elect to perform repairs yourself, use caution, common sense, and observe safety procedures in the vicinity of flammable liquids, around moving parts, near high-temperature components, and working with electrical or ignition systems.

The information offered here is only general in nature and should not be construed as complete factory approved procedures, techniques, or specifications. Always use the proper service manual for your motor, up-to-date service literature, the correct tools, and have an understanding of how to proceed with troubleshooting and repair methods. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with a procedure, a situation, or a technique, enlist the services of a factory trained technician.

Re: 60 HP E-TEC 2013 WORST ENGINE I EVER HAD

While in disagreement with posters qualification of the 60 Etec (couldn't be more trouble free and happier with my 2010), I am wondering about your question Bill, referring to having started the motor with the throttle slightly open....

Is it a no-no? If so, why?

Thanks.

Re: 60 HP E-TEC 2013 WORST ENGINE I EVER HAD

MFG, older tiller model engines had a mechanical stop to prevent engines from starting at high rpm.
Electronic controlled engines like the Etec can be started with the throttle in any position but will ignore any throttle reading and keep the engine at idle until the throttle is returned to zero.
