E-tec 40 revs don't work

Hi Evinrude fellas,

just bought low hours E-tec 40 from 2008...great engine but revs are stuck at 2000 rpm on the tachometer.

Other signal lamps seems to work ok

Is there any way to fix it

thanks

Re: E-tec 40 revs don't work

Does the motor run up ok when on the boat but that tach stays at 2000  or won't the motor go any faster than 2000 rpm?

If the motor is started with the throttle even slightly open, it will not accelerate. It is important that the throttle be completely closed when starting.

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. Should you elect to perform repairs yourself, use caution, common sense, and observe safety procedures in the vicinity of flammable liquids, around moving parts, near high-temperature components, and working with electrical or ignition systems.

The information offered here is only general in nature and should not be construed as complete factory approved procedures, techniques, or specifications. Always use the proper service manual for your motor, up-to-date service literature, the correct tools, and have an understanding of how to proceed with troubleshooting and repair methods. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with a procedure, a situation, or a technique, enlist the services of a factory trained technician.

engine runs fine but revs on gauge are dead

also trim gauge is dead

Is this fixable or new gauges?

The wiring to the gauges will have to be checked first to be sure there is 12V going to the gauge to power it and to make sure the gauge receives the proper signal to move the needle.

If it does, then the gauge would need replacement.

Re: E-tec 40 revs don't work

checked everything by electrician, gauge probably, it's yellow inside so water leak inside for sure

**bleep**, can't look at that

is it worth to get new gauge?

Re: E-tec 40 revs don't work

It is important to be able to see RPM at maximum throttle and trim in order to choose a prop that will let the engine run in its optimum rpm range.
Also a system check tachometer will give the added benefit of warning lights.
