Did you clean out salt deposits from someone not flushing the motor as they should, or was it run in the shallows, hitting bottom often and you cleaned out mud and/or sand from the cooling water passages?

Your dealer may have not had the experience with 25/30 ETECs to knock w to look for blocked cooling drains. That is one of those se things that is techs learn from experience. I have only had to remove the head to clean passages on 5 of the 200 25/30hp ETECs that we service.
