Re: Etec 25hp Nothing but Problems!

Sounds exactly like the issues I’m having with my 2016 etec 25 with 11 hours on it. Diagnostic shows an overheat prior to me replacing the water pump and impeller. It will run at idle but shuts down completely after a few minutes on plane. After dropping it at a not so local dealer I get a call, they removed the lower, to check the water pump, They wanted $450 to pull the powerhead and tighten the watertube. With 11 hours on a motor that’s been towed in 3 times and two years of warranty left I refused to sink another dime into it. Keep an eye out for a YouTube video to see what an Evinrude E-tec looks like as it goes through an industrial shredder.

We are sorry to hear that your motor has not performed as it should. Please email the serial number, the dealer's name, and a history of your experiences to   http://www.brp.com/en/forms/contact-us.html

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. Should you elect to perform repairs yourself, use caution, common sense, and observe safety procedures in the vicinity of flammable liquids, around moving parts, near high-temperature components, and working with electrical or ignition systems.

The information offered here is only general in nature and should not be construed as complete factory approved procedures, techniques, or specifications. Always use the proper service manual for your motor, up-to-date service literature, the correct tools, and have an understanding of how to proceed with troubleshooting and repair methods. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with a procedure, a situation, or a technique, enlist the services of a factory trained technician.

A lack of use (3 hours per year) is very hard on an outboard !

Re: Etec 25hp Nothing but Problems!

With the fuel formulations in past few years I have replaced fuel pumps on most brands of low hour outboard engines. A local small engine shop has been replacing a lot of carburetors on low use chainsaws, string trimmers, and generators.

Do not buy any used motor without a trained tech checking it over for you and printing out an engine report copy for your records

Re: Etec 25hp Nothing but Problems!

I have owned an etec25 for a year. Broken drive shaft while running 3/4 speed down lake, would not start on several occasions-reason not identified, throttle fell off in my hand at speed-thank god for the kill switch and all but one bolt on the lower unit fell out after dealer replacement of drive shaft-I think they forgot to tighten but they blame it on a nick in the prop.

Will this continue?

Maybe find a better dealer. All my problems got taken care off. Used Portland Marine since 1988.

Re: Etec 25hp Nothing but Problems!

Outboard dealers and their shops are like car dealer shops.
Some good, some bad, some rip outboard owners off.

Check with E-TEC owners at your docks, boating/fishing clubs and boat launches for info on what dealer these use for repairs and how the owner rates them.
