Exhaust underwater

Recently noticed that the exhaust is not coming out of rear port on back of motor but is bubbling up from under water is this normal and what could be the problem? Will it damage the motor to run it this way? 2010 50etec with 105 hrs.

This can happen when the muffler filter element becomes plugged.

 

The filter element is located in the exhaust housing (see #16 in picture below).

It's not very difficult to replace, if you are so inclined but does require removal of the lower engine cover to access.

 

It won't hurt the engine to run like this, it just makes the engine a little noisier at idle speeds.

Is this a common problem that will have to be replaced every 70-100hrs.? What causes this to get stopped up?

Replacement is part of the 3yr/300 hr service procedure. It is possible to carbon it up earlier than normal if the motor does not warm up correctly due to bad thermostats or pressure valve because more carbon is formed due to poor combustion.

How would I know if it is a bad thermostat or pressure valve. The motor runs great. Is there a way to check this out without having to take it in for service. I have called one service shop and said this was normal and didn't stock the filter and gasket so if this is a regular service item why wouldn't they have one or know about it? Where is the pressure valve located?

HMMMMM is this a common problem. Mine has 60 hours and i noticed it has more exhuast noise than before.

Monitoring the engine temperature, especially at low speeds, using a laptop and the diagnostic software is the best way to see if the thermostat and "blow off" valve are operating correctly. With care and common sense around a running engine and moving parts, the use of an infrared temp gun at the top of the cylinder head area will give a rough notification of internal engine temperature. Refer to the service manual for recommended engine temperatures and water pressures.

 

Plugging up a muffler filter is not a common problem, most dealers have never seen it before, and only the 40 through 90hp motors have one.

Will I be looking for the temperature to be too cold or running to hot?

Too cold. It should idle around 155° if everything is working correctly.

 

The fuel pressure should be checked also as if it is too high, above 30psi, then the injectors will run rich and cause excessive carbon.

Is it ill-Advised to plug up the exhaust port so that all exhaust passes through the prop?
(Wifey/Admiral is super sensitive to the exhaust smell which is drawn into the cockpit from the hull speed turbulence or if apparent wind is coming from stern... so ideally if it can be driven further away underwater that would be ideal for our 1200-1800rpm hull cruising speeds... which is 85% of use) 2009 75hp, 200 hr service performed and tuned for the xd100
