NEW Etec 30 Persistent Issues?

We own a tour business in SWFL running Craig-Cats. We’ve been doing this for about 9 years, running ETECS for about 4 of those and have never had such a problem.

We have recently repowered 3 of our boats with ETEC 30s and all 3 have given us issues right from the start(going in to SAFE and/or stalling) 2 have been in and out of the shop, plugged in to and ran but could never duplicate the issue and no codes were ever given but seems that they have now been tamed somehow as they haven’t misbehaved in a week or so.

HOWEVER...this last one was installed 3 days ago and has gone in to SAFE(or at least acts similar) 13-14 times every day during a 3 hour tour, today it finally stalled and now we have a crank no start situation. I’m taking it in to the shop tomorrow with fingers crossed we have at least a code to work with but I’m worried we have another brand new engine with a ghost issue that is literally killing my business and running my tour guides as well as my guests off. Is there something going on with these new 30s that Evinrude has yet to address? Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

Also, yes it has oil in it and yes I know it runs through oil twice as fast for the first 10 hours over 2,000rpm.

We are sorry to be informed that your motors are not living up to your expectations, and we agree, they should not be giving you these types of problems.


Your earliest engine (if the last letter is A, B, or C) may have a software update that could help with driveability if it has not been complied with yet. Ask your dealer to see if the motor has or needs the update mentioned in service bulletin 2018-01(W).


The multiple SAFE occurrences in your newest motor are surprising. Usually a SAFE mode happens if the motor overheats, lacks oil pulses, or has a voltage problem in the circuitry. The EMM will store service codes if that is the case.  Have your dealer check the motor over as soon as possible. Evinrude has a team of tech support specialists that your dealer can consult if the mechanics are unsure of the problem.

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. Should you elect to perform repairs yourself, use caution, common sense, and observe safety procedures in the vicinity of flammable liquids, around moving parts, near high-temperature components, and working with electrical or ignition systems.

In our dealership the 25/30 is our most popular engine sold so we have a lot of experience with them.
S.A.F.E. mode will set a code.
If the throttle is advanced any when cranking the engine will not run above idle. Often this is caused by in incorrect throttle cable adjustment.
We haven't seen any new 25/30's that die while running. Your dealer should check maximum rpm to see if the engines have too much pitch in the prop for slow speed touring.
