The boat is a 1988 Whaler 27' center console cuddy. It is currently powered by twin 2.6L Yamaha 200's 2-strokes (also 1988). These engines move the boat along well even though the boat has a max hp rating of 600hp.
I am considering either the twin 200's or twin 225 Etecs. I was also wondering what the performance difference would be between the 60 degree block and the 90 degree block. Any information would be appreciated.
I have been on boats like yours and would definitely recommend the E-TEC 225's, 300's if you can. The 200HO would be the very minimum power if you could not swing the 225hp engines.
The 2.6 200 is the 60° block that is best for lighter boats such as flats boats, runabouts, and bass boats. The 90° bock 200HO has more cubes for much more torque which is what you need in a heavy boat like the Whaler. You will be happy to have that extra low end "oomph" when out in a following sea.
With the E-TECs you should at least cut your fuel bill in half, get better acceleration, and save a bunch on the oil too. at the same time you get smoother and quieter engines, no smoke, and instant starts. For your type of use, the 50amp charging systems and optional independent isolator battery system, will make your boating much more enjoyable. Right now there is a sales promotion going on that gives 5 year warranty and free props, controls, cables, gauges, oil tanks, etc for a limited time. Talk to your dealer.
