I may be wrong but when i bought my Etec and wanted a fuel/water separator outside of engine Evinrude said it would cause a flow restriction.  Hope it helps.

Evinrude did not say that a filter was not to be installed as one is recommended in the rigging manuals and has been in publications and training centers for decades.


It must have been an individual at a dealership who did not have training or knowledge.

I experienced an failed powerhead an injector recently on a 2016 evinrude etec 40 hp. I run 87 octane nonethanol gas. Thankfully it was under warranty. I had plenty of oil in reservoir an plenty of gas an water pump had been pumping fine all morning. All of a sudden while running up the river it drops rpm an goes to running bad as if it was firing on one cylinder. I havent got it back t from the shop as they are still working on it. Evinrude has one more strike with me then I am going to go back to my yamaha. This is the second etec I've had mess up on me just under normal use. The first was a 25 etec that I replaced 2 water pumps on at 280 bucks a pop. I took care of this 40 an made sure I ran good gas an kept oil in the reservoir an never had an issue with the water pump an just under normal use the powerhead fails...just pushing me toward a different brand..
