Re: etec 30 warranty issues

Water pumps are wearable items that require periodic replacement not only from wearing out but on a calendar basis because of the impeller material degrading over time. The impeller fits tightly inside the water pump housing in a compressed state. As it ages, the rubber becomes brittle and can easily break or take a "set" if left too long- either of  which lessens the pump volume to cool the motor. Most outboard motors of other makes require a water pump inspection every year because of that fact.  In saltwater and especially in sandy or muddy waters, a pump will wear out much sooner than 3 years and your operator's guide mentions that it may need sooner replacement in those environments.

Your motor is over 3 years old and already past the required maintenance schedule which has to be completed before any type of warranty could even be considered as the motor is being operated contrary to the published maintenance schedule in the operator's guide and that is considered abuse.

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. Should you elect to perform repairs yourself, use caution, common sense, and observe safety procedures in the vicinity of flammable liquids, around moving parts, near high-temperature components, and working with electrical or ignition systems.

The information offered here is only general in nature and should not be construed as complete factory approved procedures, techniques, or specifications. Always use the proper service manual for your motor, up-to-date service literature, the correct tools, and have an understanding of how to proceed with troubleshooting and repair methods. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with a procedure, a situation, or a technique, enlist the services of a factory trained technician.

30 hours in 3 years! You should either rent or lease your boat and outboard! Lack of use is far more severe than over use. This site is very open about the 3 year 300 hour service requirement. and $700 does not seem out of line!
