Re: i.d. serial number without id plate

[ Edited ]

If there is only one carburetor on the motor, then it is not a 40 hp.  Does the front of the motor look like this one?

Can you post individual pictures of both sides of the powerhead of the powerhead showing the whole width of it, plus straight on shots of the front and back of the powerhead?

The motor is older than 1996

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. Should you elect to perform repairs yourself, use caution, common sense, and observe safety procedures in the vicinity of flammable liquids, around moving parts, near high-temperature components, and working with electrical or ignition systems.

The information offered here is only general in nature and should not be construed as complete factory approved procedures, techniques, or specifications. Always use the proper service manual for your motor, up-to-date service literature, the correct tools, and have an understanding of how to proceed with troubleshooting and repair methods. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with a procedure, a situation, or a technique, enlist the services of a factory trained technician.

Re: i.d. serial number without id plate

It only has one carburetor, I was wondering about that myself. I did a Google search on the number that is stamped on the outer exhaust cover (326713) and I found a used one for sale that said it fit 1981-1988 20, 25, 28, 30, and 35hp models. That is about all the information I have been able to find. I am assuming it is within that year range more than likely 30-35hp.

ncfowler,

It is NOT  a 40hp.

Your motor is a 1995 or earlier 20,25,30,or 35 hp. Most common maintenance parts are the same over the years.
