Re: 2015 etec burning oil rapidly 40 hp

Your motor only holds 1/2 gallon of oil, are you saying that you have run out of oil 4 times already ?

The motor must have been smoking quite a lot and been very objectionable if it were burning that much oil in a 2-cylinder 40hp motor. The initial few hours of engine operation will use a significant amount of oil depending how the motor is used. Frequent stops and starts, high rpm running, fast accelerations, lugging the motor, and temperature problems contribute to increased oil consumption.

Most complaints of oil consumption are due to inaccurate measurements or an engine that is severely overpropped or running above the redline rpm limit.

Can  you give us the engine information and specifics?

What is the engine's model and serial number?

What propeller and what is the top rpm at full speed?

What is the boat's top speed?

What make pontoon boat?

Did the dealer run the boat before delivery or did you pick it up and put it in the water yourself?

The factory recommends that a properly trained technician service your Johnson or Evinrude outboard motor. Should you elect to perform repairs yourself, use caution, common sense, and observe safety procedures in the vicinity of flammable liquids, around moving parts, near high-temperature components, and working with electrical or ignition systems.

Re: 2015 etec burning oil rapidly 40 hp

Bill the info u requested Sorry it took longer than expected

Southbay 22ft
I keep it in a slip no lift

top speed 14 Rpm's 5700 full throttle

I put it in the water

2014 etec 40hp i will get serial number and model late

it now has 67 hours on it and it's burned 3 1/2 gallons since day one
94 gallons of fuel used (est)

When I first purchased they came out for a engine miss and changed the setting on TPS Yesterday I checked oil and it was barely registered No oil light came on - Dealer says its normal
I think it's a programming problem

With  a 14mph top speed, I assume that you run the motor at full throttle most of the time.

There is a possibility that your tachometer is not totally accurate and that can be checked  by the dealer with his laptop.

What make, model, and size propeller is on the boat?

Yes, you can have the dealer reprogram the motor to use less oil but you can only use the XD-100 Evinrude oil at this setting.

Re: 2015 etec burning oil rapidly 40 hp

I've used it from day 1

Does the oil usage seem excessive

And why only use xd100

Re: 2015 etec burning oil rapidly 40 hp

If the engine is programmed to the reduced XD-100 oil that is all you should use for best protection. As it leaves the factory the default setting is an TC-W3 oil but XD-100 is the best. that is a small engine on a big boat and if you run around at high RPM fuel and therefore oil usage will be more than a 40HP on a light weight little boat. If you idled everywhere the engine would use hardly any fuel (they idle on 0.4L/hr and therefore oil usage will be almost nil
